y using Laminaria tents/Japonica tents, the dilation of the cervix can be obtained painlessly and with no danger of injuring the musculature of the uterus. There are no risks of uterine perforation and cervical laceration. Laminaria tents/Japonica tents should be considered wherever cervical dilation (or softening of the cervix) is desired. Some examples are:

1. Cervical stenosis related to dysmeorrhea -- possible cause of infertility resulting from cauterization or conization.
2. Placement and removal of intrauterine devices.
3. Radium placement.
4. Drainage of uterine cavity.
5. Abrasio uteri.

Laminaria tents/Japonica tents are capable of absorbing fluids from uterine cervix. The tents swell gradually up to four times their diameters and make an indulgent and symmetrical dilation of the cervical canal. Laminaria tents/Japonica tents diameters swell within the first 6 hours after insertion and may continue to grow for 24 hours in total.

Throughout the world, leading physicians and gynecologists have appreciated Laminaria tents/Japonica tents for more than a century, in cases where dilation of the cervix is indicated and are often preferred to the Hegar's dilators. The use of Hanka or Hegar's dilators is attended with the risk of uternine perforation and cervical laceration. The gradual swelling of the Laminaria has been found to be far less traumatic than rapid dilation methods. The swelling is quick, regular and reliable.
